England
The tug-of-war sport in many countries was part of the athletic or gymnastics sport association. However after its elimination from the Olympic programme, the tug-of-war sport became neglected by those associations.
Tug-of-war was very popular in police sports clubs in Great Britain. The best British teams during the Olympic period came from the Metropolitan Police in London. Mr. George Hutton, an officer in the London police force took the initiative to form the tug-of-war association in England. The association is still very closely related to the English Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) as can be seen in their logo.
Mr. Hutton became also the initiator to the formation of the international federation for the tug-of-war sport which was formed in 1960, under the name of TWIF.
