Competition
The US Tug of War Association organizes the second time a World Championships in the USA, this time in Rochester, Minnesota with excellent accommodation facilities nearby.
 
IOC Recognition
TWIF is not included in the newly published list of IOC recognized federations. In May President Koren contacts IOC Vice President Rogge to arrange a meeting with him. Due to the fully loaded agenda of Jacques Rogge this meeting could only take place in October 1998 in Brussels. Following the meeting with Jacques Rogge, President Koren met with several IOC Executive members during World Games and GAISF meetings to obtain support for the TWIF application.
 
Development
Rules TWIF updates the score system for points competition so that no third and deciding pull is done (0-3; 3-0; 1-1) to save time in the points competition.
